By the time you read this, the Christmas Holidays will be a thing of the past for another year. Either you will have gotten everything you wanted for Christmas or didn't, or it's already broken or forgotten about. If you are lucky, it still works and you still like it! Regardless, it will soon be time to put all the decorations away, stored safely until next December. It's time to get out the new calendars for the 2012. It's a brand new year, never been used, fresh with possibilities. How exciting! I love to receive wall calendars for Christmas. I usually get several and hang them in different rooms in the house. My favorites are those with cats and kittens on them. I always peek ahead to see what I can expect from month to month. I have one calendar reserved for church and work. I sit down with the year just past and the new year side by side, month by month. I transfer important dates from the old calendar to the new. In the process, I review the year, and am reminded of significant events that we have shared together in the life of the church. I am also reminded how quickly they can fade from view. Resurrection for the youth, the confirmation class, Easter joy, weddings, funerals, Vacation Bible School, and so on. Then there were baby showers and anniversary celebrations, committee meetings, Wednesday night meals, classes, and more. What a year we've had!
Many of us will make resolutions for the New Year, only to break them about as quickly as we make them. We start the year with our plans in place and full of energy and resolve. We are going to lose weight, get in shape, read our Bibles every day, clean out closets, finally remodel that bathroom, write letters to long lost friends (that we haven't reconnected with through Facebook). We really, really mean it. I found this cartoon that pretty well sums up how well we do.
What hope do we have? First and foremost, we need to be still. We need to prayerfully consider what God desires from us. Then we need to allow God to set our agendas. Draw near to Christ and he will draw near to you. We fare better taking small steps in only one or two areas of our lives at a time, rather than tackling to many goals at once. In time, little by little, we will be transformed into the people God already knows we can be. We want instant solutions, but gradual transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit is often more effective. But we wonder, how do we know if we are on the right track? How do we know if we are really responding to God and not our own inner wants and desires?
One way is to compare with what the Bible has to say. I love what we find in 2 Corinthians about becoming a new creation in Christ and seeing others from the standard that Jesus sets for us: So then, from this point on we won't recognize people by human standards. Even though we used to know Christ by human standards, that isn't how we know him now. So then, if anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived! 2 Corinthians 5:16 17 (Common English Bible)
If we are in Christ, we are already new creations! How wonderful is that? And we didn't even have to break a sweat at the gym. That doesn't mean that improving our physical condition is a bad thing. The point is that we spend too much time trying to improve our selves so that we can prove our worth to God and others, and not enough time savoring the reality that God already loves us and has and is creating something new and better. In us and in those we meet. We already are new creations. How awesome is that?
Happy New Year! May it be filled with grace and peace and the love of God!!

Congratulations and welcome to these eight young people who journeyed together with Amy Greene, Brandon Moore, Pastor Carole and a group of dedicated mentors. They learned more about Christianity as a lifelong journey of faith. Together they explored the Bible, the history of Methodism, and even the United Methodist Hymnal. Four were baptized and four reaffirmed their baptism at a special Saturday evening service, and all eight were confirmed and welcomed into full membership on Sunday May 1. Each confirmand received a personalized stole and their own hymnal. They participated in the worship service that morning, including serving the congregation during Holy Communion.
